Ximena Diaz was the last of her siblings left at home. Her eldest brother, Salazar, was already married with a kid and a few days away from completing his lifetime want (and by proxy their father's).
Life was good.
Her kittens, Rotten and Rosie, became cats.
And she even qualified for a few scholarships at Boolprop College.
Ximena: You hear that, Rotten? I got a dance scholarship!
Well, almost everything was good.
Ximena: Holy crap!
Salazar: Ximena? What did you do?
Luckily the Diaz' kitchen was equipped with a fire alarm, so there wasn't anything to really worry about.
Ximena: Do you think it was a bomb?
Salazar: Seriously? Ximena, no offense but how many cooking skill points do you even have?
Ximena: I'm serious. I heard that's what happened next door that killed that family.
Salazar: You shouldn't overthink it. The husband of the previous owner was involved in some pretty shady things- just ask dad.
With Nina at work, Ximena and her father sat down for a... crispy... meal with her brother.
Salazar: Dad, Ximena tell her what happened to the Borgs.
Leo: Son, your sister doesn't need to know these things.
Salazar: She thinks whoever went after them is coming after her, too.
Leo: Well, she shouldn't. What happened to them, while tragic, will not happen to this family.
Salazar: Fine, I'll say it. Berjes Borg worked in the criminal underworld. All of his wife's businesses were a money laundering front, or at least the arcade was. Hell, maybe a few of them were legit to cover their trail. When we opened up my gallery, he tried to get us involved. A lot of sketchy people use art sales as a cover for other dealings.
Ximena: So... you're saying those people all died... even the little kid... as a mafia hit? But what about the new family that moved in? They just got to town this past summer.
Leo: Unfortunately, we didn't know our new neighbours too well.
Salazar: Look, the point is we'll all be fine.
Ximena: You think so?
Salazar: As long as we keep out of trouble, we'll all live long happy lives. I can't speak for anyone else in this town, though.
After 28 days in the Diaz home, it was finally time for Nina and Leo's joint elder birthday. Salazar was unable to come due to work, but Benito and Salome were both available to celebrate with their parents.
The couple grew old happily surrounded by most of their children.
Benito: So you're saying that three of the cats have reached the top of their careers so far? Bummer I wasn't here for it.
Nina: Yes, I think it's time to retire from the ballet company.
All in all, it was a successful party.
Benito & Salome: AHHHH!
Although it wasn't easy to hear about the death of the Borg family (and she still had questions about the Wilcox-Pages), Ximena was ready to move on from her own near death experience.
Mark Cameron was one of the few boys in the neighbourhood around her age that she really clicked with.
They both seemed to have a thing for one another that was undeniable.
They both came from big families, so if they wound up together down the road it would make sense.
For now, though, Ximena had to think about college.
This meant that Nina and Leo were officially empty nesters.
Well, apart from the cats.
